The Battle of the Novogorodians with the Suzdalians 16th century Size 50.5 x 47.5 x 3 cm. The icon is located in the Russian Federation. There is an expert opinion from leading Russian specialists on ancient Russian art V.V. Baranov, A.S. Preobrazhensky. Chemical analysis of the paint layers of the icon, made by leading chemist S.A. Pisareva. signed expert opinions upon request via 1st dibs messaging center. In 1170, on the territory of ancient Novgorod, a battle took place between the Suzdal and Novgorod residents, which served as the basis for the painting of the future icon. The reason for the battle was the political ambitions of the Vladimir-Suzdal prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, who sent his son Mstislav along with the army he had assembled from five principalities (Vladimir, Ryazan, Murom, Smolensk and Polotsk) to conquer Novgorod. The line of the eastern rampart, located in the eastern part of Novgorod, was chosen as the site for the battle, where, a century and a half later, the Tithe Monastery was built on this site. Today the State Museum of Art Culture of the Novgorod Land is located here. Event history: On the second night after the entry of the Suzdal army into Novgorod, the head of the city church, Archbishop John, prayed in the St. Sophia Cathedral in front of the icon of the Savior, and heard a voice that commanded him to go to the western part of the city, and head to the Sofia side, located on the opposite side of the Volkhov River. where in the church of St. Elijah the Prophet he should take the icon of the Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos and take it to the battle site. As the battle began, Archbishop John raised the icon of the “Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos” above his head and pointed it at the Suzdal residents. The enemy's arrows fired in his direction did not touch the icon and flew back towards the Suzdal people. Seeing the help of the Mother of God to the Novgorod army, the Suzdal army mixed with each other, many became blind and began to fight with each other. Thus, the Novgorodians won a victory over the Suzdalians. Memory of the event in iconography: The memory of the salvation of ancient Novgorod from the attack of the Suzdalians in 1170, thanks to the “participation of the Most Holy Theotokos,” passed from generation to generation in the form of oral narratives. That same year, in November, Archbishop John established a holiday in honor of this event, dedicated to the icon “The Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos,” which later became part of the tradition of celebration throughout the Russian Orthodox Church. In the 14th century, the first “story of the battle” appeared. In the 15th century, a story was written “about the miracle of the Virgin Mary,” which was included in the Novgorod chronicle, along with which an icon dedicated to this event was painted.
