The Battle of the Novogorodians with the Suzdalians 16th century Size 50.5 x 47.5 x 3 cm. The icon is located in the Russian Federation. In 1170, on the territory of ancient Novgorod, a battle took place between the Suzdal and Novgorod residents, which served as the basis for the painting of the future icon. The reason for the battle was the political ambitions of the Vladimir-Suzdal prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, who sent his son Mstislav along with the army he had assembled from five principalities (Vladimir, Ryazan, Murom, Smolensk and Polotsk) to conquer Novgorod.
